Aitken Spence entered
the power generation industry to develop two 20MW thermal power
plants in partnership with Wartsila Finland OY, Common Wealth
Development Corporation (UK) and Banaras House Limited (India).
These plants are located in Matara and Horana and were commissioned
on schedule and commenced commercial operations in 2002.
The second largest contributor to the group has installed a 100MW plant in Embilipitiya developed jointly with Caterpillar of USA began generating power from the beginning of April, 2005. As power generation is now one of our core activities, risk of default from the off-taker is ever present due to their adverse financial state.
Drawing from the exposure and experience gained in recent projects,
the Group is actively pursuing involvement and investment in
related areas in line with the Government policy of seeking
increased private sector participation. Aitken Spence also has
ventures into tourism, logistics and strategic investments.
